A California judge suspended criminal proceedings Wednesday against a former U.S. Marine who was arrested at President Donald Trump’s Los Angeles-area golf course after authorities allegedly discovered a loaded firearm and ammunition inside his vehicle.
Los Angeles County Judge John Lonergan Jr. transferred Jeanine John Taele, 38, to a mental health court in Hollywood after statements made during a pretrial evaluation indicated that he was not mentally competent to stand trial.
During the evaluation, Taele falsely claimed that he had worked as a State Department official for 14 years.
Taele was arrested Aug. 5 at Trump National Golf Course Los Angeles in Rancho Palos Verdes, where Trump was scheduled to attend a Republican National Committee dinner. Authorities reportedly observed Taele wearing an earpiece and photographing the property.
A search of Taele’s pickup truck in the golf course parking lot uncovered a loaded 9 mm pistol, binoculars and a badge bearing the words “security protection agent,” according to the U.S. attorney’s office in Los Angeles.
Lonergan also expressed concern about roughly 200 pages of writings investigators found after Taele’s arrest. Those materials reportedly included schedules for first lady Melania Trump and members of the president’s Secret Service, along with detailed lists about surviving “off the grid.”
The judge did not indicate whether the writings contained any specific political ideology or motive.
“This case itself is alarming in this day and age with the violence that is creeping into our everyday lives, especially with our partisanship in the political environment” ahead of the midterm elections, Lonergan said.
The judge also pointed to Taele’s previous arrest at an AT&T store in November 2025. During that incident, Taele accused an employee of using Meta Glasses to spy on him, took the glasses and was later found muttering to himself in the parking lot. He was charged with second-degree robbery.
Taele now faces several felony charges, including possession of a short-barreled rifle or shotgun and receiving a large-capacity magazine. He was also charged with misdemeanor carrying a concealed firearm inside a vehicle.
Taele appeared in a Torrance courtroom Wednesday wearing a protective vest intended to prevent self-harm or suicide attempts. Nearly a dozen relatives and friends watched tearfully from the courtroom.
Lonergan declined to set bail, meaning Taele will remain jailed until a Sept. 9 hearing in Hollywood Mental Health Court.
Public defender A.J. Bayne said it was too soon to determine whether Taele’s mental health would affect his defense. Bayne noted that Taele is a veteran with a loving and supportive family and warned that “people assume too much” about his motives.
A Marine Corps spokesperson said Taele served two tours in Iraq and Afghanistan between 2008 and 2016. The former corporal received several honors, including two Marine Corps Good Conduct Medals, a Navy Unit Commendation, a National Defense Service Medal and a Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.
