President Donald Trump will return to the campaign trail next week to commemorate the 100-day mark of his second term with a rally in Macomb County, Michigan — a key battleground he flipped in last year’s election.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed Wednesday that Trump will visit the suburban Detroit region on Tuesday, calling it a celebration of his early achievements since reentering the Oval Office, wrote The Associated Press.

The visit will be Trump’s first rally since returning to the White House and only his second domestic trip since January, aside from personal weekend getaways. His previous travel included stops in disaster-struck areas of North Carolina and California, along with an event in Las Vegas promoting his plan to eliminate federal taxes on tipped income.

Later this week, Trump is expected to travel abroad for the first time in his new term, attending Pope Francis’ funeral in Rome.

The Michigan rally comes as Trump engages in a series of policy discussions with Governor Gretchen Whitmer, a Democrat who has sought to work with the president despite their often combative history. The Detroit News reported that a topic of shared interest is the future of Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Macomb County, where the aging A-10 fleet is being retired.

Trump expressed support for maintaining the base’s viability during an executive order signing on April 9, with Whitmer in attendance.

“I think we’re going to be successful, governor. I think we’ll be very successful there,” Trump said about Selfridge in remarks in the Oval Office with Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Republican state House Speaker Matt Hall standing nearby the president’s desk.

“We’ve gotten some good feedback from (Defense Secretary) Pete Hegseth and the Department of Defense, and talking about F-16s and talking about F-35s, and, you know, et cetera. It’s a great piece of property. It’s a great location, and it’s a great state. So I think we’re going to come back with a very good answer.”

A spokesperson for Whitmer said Wednesday they had “nothing to share at this time” regarding whether she would join Trump at next week’s event.

Whitmer has pushed for Selfridge to receive a new fighter mission, reiterating her case in a 2023 letter to the Air Force during the Biden administration. “A fighter mission at Selfridge to recapitalize the A-10s is the right path forward,” she wrote, underscoring its strategic value for the state and the nation. The Michigan governor has faced pressure from her own party for not attacking Trump at every moment. During a recent White House visit, Whitmer was caught trying to hide from photographers.

Trump is the only national Republican to win the state of Michigan in 40 years.
