The Trump administration’s Treasury Department reportedly announced a new set of sanctions aimed at dismantling the financial infrastructure of the Sinaloa Cartel, a notorious drug trafficking organization recently designated as a foreign terror group.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated, “We’ve taken decisive action against the Sinaloa Cartel, one of the most violently entrenched criminal organizations in the world.”

The sanctions target six individuals and seven entities believed to be involved in laundering money for the cartel, effectively cutting off crucial funding sources.

Bessent emphasized that the Sinaloa Cartel has had a devastating impact on U.S. communities, stating they have “tortured and murdered countless citizens, including law enforcement officers and veterans.”

He noted the cartel is responsible for a significant portion of the fentanyl and other illicit drugs flooding into the United States, which continue to claim innocent lives and devastate families.

The sanctions require all U.S. financial institutions to freeze and report any assets held by those designated under the order, directly impacting the cartel’s monetary operations.

This announcement follows a recent declaration by the State Department, which described the Sinaloa Cartel as one of the world’s most powerful drug trafficking organizations.

In response to escalating cartel violence, various federal agencies have ramped up enforcement efforts. Recently, FBI Director Kash Patel reported the extradition of a leader of the MS-13 gang from Mexico.

Additionally, the Trump administration has invoked the Alien Enemies Act to expedite the removal of suspected members of Tren de Aragua, despite facing legal challenges from judges who have opposed this approach.

Overall, the sanctions and ongoing enforcement actions underscore the administration’s commitment to combating drug trafficking and enhancing national security.
