Senator John Fetterman, D-Pa., lashed out at a group of reporters on Capitol Hill Tuesday after they chased him down and pressed him about his political future, just days after he made a surprise appearance at President Donald Trump’s Republican midterm convention.
The reporters followed Fetterman as they questioned him about Wall Street Journal reporting that detailed allegations from former staffers claiming the senator showed “little interest” in some of his day-to-day responsibilities, including accusations that he skipped hearings and canceled meetings with constituents. Fetterman had previously dismissed that reporting as “lies.”
At first, Fetterman brushed off the questions from reporters. But as he waited by an elevator, one reporter finally got under his skin, asking, “The way the Democratic Party is going right now, is there a chance for you to become a Republican, sir?”
“I’m not going to be a Republican!” Fetterman snapped back.
He didn’t stop there. “Why can’t you guys just wait till the midterms? And if I turn a Republican, then I’ll be a liar, then,” Fetterman continued.
“My name is not on the ballot. Like, chill and wait for the midterm here!” he added, clearly frustrated. “I’ve always been a Democrat. It’s like no matter how many times I say that, I’m still getting asked just getting into the elevator.”
The heated exchange came less than a week after Fetterman appeared by video at the Republican midterm convention in Dallas, where he introduced Sen. Dave McCormick, R-Pa., and pledged to work with Trump. In the clip, filmed outside Western Pennsylvania’s Mon Valley Works steel mill, Fetterman said he and McCormick would work with Trump “to fight and defend the steel way of life right here in the Steel Valley.”
That appearance only added fuel to the fire, intensifying scrutiny over Fetterman’s increasingly rocky relationship with parts of his own party. Despite his repeated insistence that he remains a Democrat, the senator has faced mounting questions about where his political loyalties truly lie. Fetterman is not up for reelection until 2028, giving him some breathing room before voters weigh in.
Still, the Capitol Hill confrontation shows no signs of the scrutiny letting up anytime soon. Between the Wall Street Journal’s bombshell report on his work habits and his warm words for Trump and McCormick at a Republican convention, reporters appear determined to get clarity on exactly where Fetterman stands as the midterms approach. For now, the senator insists he isn’t switching parties, but his growing willingness to cross the aisle and praise Republican figures has left plenty of unanswered questions hanging in the air.
Whether Fetterman’s balancing act between his Democratic identity and his outreach to Trump and Republican allies will hold up remains to be seen, but Tuesday’s elevator exchange made clear that patience is wearing thin, both for the senator facing the press and for the reporters pressing him for straight answers.
