Trump Says Iran Is In ‘State of Collapse’

President Donald Trump said Tuesday that Iran has told the United States it is “in a state of collapse” and is seeking to reopen the Strait of Hormuz “as soon as possible,” as tensions remain elevated following recent U.S. military action.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote: “Iran has just informed us that they are in a ‘State of Collapse’. They want us to ‘Open the Hormuz Strait’ as soon as possible, as they try to figure out their leadership situation (Which I believe they will be able to do!)”

The assertion comes as Tehran has floated a proposal to reopen the critical waterway — a vital conduit for global oil shipments — while deferring broader negotiations over its nuclear program.

It remains unclear what specific communications or intelligence Trump was referencing. Iranian officials have not publicly confirmed any statement indicating the country is in a state of collapse or that it has made an immediate request to reopen the strait.

According to sources briefed on the matter who spoke to Axios, the Iranian proposal would involve lifting the blockade and restoring access through the Strait of Hormuz before resuming nuclear talks at a later stage. Trump reviewed the proposal with his national security team on Monday, though no decisions were reached.

One person familiar with the discussions said the president appeared unenthusiastic about the offer, citing concerns that delaying negotiations would sideline the administration’s central objective of addressing Tehran’s nuclear program.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt underscored that position in remarks Monday.

“The president’s red lines with respect to Iran have been made very, very clear, not just to the American public, but also to them as well,” Leavitt said.

The Strait of Hormuz has emerged as a central flashpoint in the confrontation, with any disruption posing immediate risks to global energy markets. While Trump’s comments suggest Iran may be seeking a rapid de-escalation amid internal strain, the claim could not be independently verified.

The administration has continued to press for the complete dismantlement of Iran’s nuclear capabilities, a demand Trump has repeatedly characterized as non-negotiable.
