A Georgia state representative from the Peach State who infuriated her Democratic colleagues in the Georgia state House of Representatives by supporting a recent school choice measure is now reportedly anticipated to declare her formal party affiliation.
Mesha Mainor, a Democrat who has served as District 56’s representative in the Georgia state House since January 2021, would make the announcement just before noon on Tuesday.
“When I decided to stand up on behalf of disadvantaged children in support of school choice, my Democrat colleagues didn’t stand by me. They crucified me. When I decided to stand up in support of safe communities and refused to support efforts to defund the police, they didn’t back me. They abandoned me.” Mainor said in a statement to Fox News.
“For far too long, the Democrat Party has gotten away with using and abusing the black community. For decades, the Democrat Party has received the support of more than 90% of the black community. And what do we have to show for it? I represent a solidly blue district in the city of Atlanta. This isn’t a political decision for me. It’s a moral one.” she continued.
In light of her decision to transfer parties, Mainor said that she has “been met with much encouragement” over her decison.
After joining the Republican Party, Mainor clarified that extending the party’s majority in the House and focusing on education will remain her top goals.
In a video posted to social media in May, Mainor claimed that Democrats were turning against her because she was a fervent supporter of school choice.
Mainor used the fact that some of the schools in her district only have 3% of their students proficient in reading and arithmetic to support her argument.
