Spanish player Borja Iglesias said he is uncomfortable with the prospect of shaking hands with President Donald Trump if Spain defeats Argentina in Sunday’s 2026 FIFA World Cup final.
Speaking with Spanish media Saturday, Iglesias made clear that he hopes any encounter with Trump during a potential trophy presentation would be brief.
“I don’t want to go to prison,” he said of shaking Trump’s hand. “I hope to greet him at a time when we are all very happy, and that it passes very quickly and I can forget about it.
“I don’t think this is the time to create controversy. People know perfectly well what I think. I would love to do many things, but the reality is that even if people think I am all-powerful, I don’t have that much power to tackle certain things.”
The final between Spain and Argentina is scheduled for 3 p.m. Eastern at New York/New Jersey Stadium and will air live on FOX. Trump is expected to attend the match and participate in the postgame trophy ceremony.
The president has taken part in other major FIFA events, including the Club World Cup presentation. FIFA President Gianni Infantino has praised the Trump administration’s involvement in the World Cup and described the tournament as a historic cultural event during a reception at Trump Tower.
