A social media dispute erupted Sunday between conservative commentator Meghan McCain and Pod Save America host Tommy Vietor after McCain raised questions about confidence in California’s election process, sparking a lengthy exchange of insults and political accusations.
The confrontation began after McCain shared a clip from President Donald Trump’s contentious interview on NBC’s Meet the Press. During the interview, Trump defended his long-standing concerns about election integrity while sparring with moderator Kristen Welker, who pressed him to provide evidence supporting his claims.
“The election was rigged. It was a dirty election, and it’s again right now in California,” Trump said during the exchange. As Welker continued to challenge him, Trump pointed to the slow pace of vote counting in California.
“It’s four days, and they’re not even close to coming up with a—you know why they’re doing that? Because they’re cheating on the election,” he said.
The comments came amid continued vote counting in the Los Angeles mayoral race. Republican candidate Spencer Pratt had slipped into third place, moving behind City Council member Nithya Raman after previously holding a stronger position in the contest to advance to November’s runoff election against incumbent Mayor Karen Bass.
McCain suggested that skepticism about California’s election system was no longer limited to those who traditionally discuss election fraud claims.
“For whatever it’s worth, people in my life who have never ever spoken about stolen elections in any capacity are now saying this about California,” she wrote alongside the video clip.
Vietor, a former aide to President Barack Obama, quickly challenged McCain’s assertion. He argued that growing distrust in California elections was being fueled by conservative messaging rather than legitimate concerns about the process.
“Hmmm wonder if that’s because there’s a massive right wing disinformation campaign to spread this bullsh*t,” Vietor responded.
McCain wasted little time firing back.
“No one is talking to you Obama Bro. Like no one,” she wrote.
The exchange quickly escalated. Vietor mocked McCain’s confidence that Pratt could perform well in heavily Democratic Los Angeles, referencing campaign videos that had attracted attention online.
“It’s not my fault that you’re a bozo and believed that Pratt AI slop videos were going to win him an election in LA,” Vietor wrote.
McCain countered by turning the discussion toward Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner, a Democrat who has faced controversy during his campaign.
“I’m the bozo?” she replied. “You’re the one shilling hard for a guy with a Nazi tattoo who abuses his girlfriends.”
Vietor continued the back-and-forth, urging McCain not to spread claims about California’s elections and arguing that residents familiar with the state’s voting system understood how the process worked.
“Now Meggy let’s not get snippy,” Vietor wrote. “All I’m saying is don’t spread lies about the California elections. Those of us who actually live here and understand the process don’t need more uninformed takes.”
The dispute then shifted from election concerns to accusations about online behavior. McCain invited Vietor to appear on her program and explain his views directly rather than continuing the argument on social media.
“Fine – you wanna set me straight? Feel free to come on my show and tell me why I’m wrong. Or is it easier to sh*tpost on social media?” she wrote.
Vietor responded that information about California’s election procedures was readily available and suggested McCain was ignoring factual explanations.
The feud carried over into Monday morning, when McCain expressed frustration with Vietor’s tone and defended her audience, many of whom she described as busy working parents seeking answers to questions about public issues.
“Why are you SUCH AN A**HOLE?! Jesus Christ dude,” McCain wrote. “Sorry you don’t see the benefit of a filmed bipartisan conversation for my audience who also have questions & don’t have time to google all day. A lot of them are working moms just trying to get by and take care of their family.”
