Klobuchar Mocked After Thanksgiving Post Backfires and Highlights Biden-Era Energy Spikes

Sen. Amy Klobuchar attempted to take a Thanksgiving swipe at President Donald Trump this week — but instead wound up handing conservatives fresh ammunition against President Joe Biden. What was meant to be a dig at Trump using a graph about rising household energy arrears quickly turned into an embarrassing self-own for the Minnesota Democrat, as the data on her own chart showed the steep rise began squarely under Biden’s watch.

Klobuchar posted on X claiming that energy prices under Trump had risen “11%,” insisting that “American families deserve better.” To support her point, she shared a graph from The Century Foundation that displayed ballooning overdue energy balances, rising from $597 in 2022 to $789 today — a jump of 32 percent.

But conservatives immediately noticed what Klobuchar either missed or hoped no one would catch: the chart’s sharp upward trajectory began in 2022, during the Biden administration, not during Trump’s previous term. MAGA supporters quickly seized on the oversight, pointing out that the visual evidence contradicted the senator’s attempt to blame Trump for the problem.

Among those who highlighted the blunder was CNN contributor and prominent MAGA commentator Scott Jennings, who openly mocked the post. Others swarmed the senator’s feed, pointing out that the graph effectively “dunked on Biden” by illustrating household financial strain that took root and accelerated during his presidency.

Adding to the embarrassment, the post was slapped with a community note correcting Klobuchar’s framing. The note stated: “Joe Biden was President from January 20, 2021 – January 20, 2025. Also, this chart is not representing the cost of electricity. It is showing the average past-due balances of Americans, which soared since 2022 under Joe Biden’s presidency.”

Even the report Klobuchar cited contradicted the narrative she attempted to push. While the senator used overdue balances to suggest problems during Trump’s tenure, the same analysis clearly showed that residential electricity costs surged sharply between January and August 2025 — rising by 10.5 percent, one of the fastest increases in a decade. The factors driving those spikes included high interest rates, increased natural gas prices, and soaring power demand from data centers, all issues tied to economic conditions during the Biden years.

While Klobuchar’s misstep drew plenty of online mockery, the underlying numbers reflect a serious financial strain on American households. Rising arrears are part of a broader cost-of-living squeeze that many families have been grappling with throughout Biden’s presidency. Polling shows that conservative voters overwhelmingly blame the administration for these pressures, viewing inflation, energy costs, and rising debt burdens as the direct result of failed leadership and unsustainable economic policies.

Klobuchar intended to use her holiday message to take a jab at Trump. Instead, by circulating a chart that highlights economic hardship under Biden, she inadvertently underscored why so many voters remain frustrated — and why the administration continues to face deep skepticism on its handling of the economy.
