President Donald Trump said Monday that he is considering removing Kimberly Guilfoyle as U.S. ambassador to Greece following reports accusing her of improper conduct, including threatening a Greek official, accepting inappropriate gifts and seeking financial favors from a political donor.
“Well, we’re looking at it. We’re not happy,” Trump told reporters at the White House.
The Associated Press reported that Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are “extremely pissed off” over the allegations and could decide Guilfoyle’s fate this week, citing a senior U.S. official.
The Wall Street Journal has published several reports detailing allegations against Guilfoyle, including claims that she threatened to undermine the Greek government, promoted the interests of a Greek construction and energy company, and allowed its lobbyist to participate in private diplomatic meetings.
The newspaper also reported that Guilfoyle sought $100,000 from a Trump donor to cover a credit-card bill shortly before her confirmation hearing, allegedly offering access to administration officials in return. Other reports described luxury travel with energy executives and disputes surrounding her attendance at a World Economic Forum event in Davos.
Guilfoyle’s attorneys, David Schwartz and Jesse Binnall, rejected the allegations Sunday, saying the money represented unpaid fees for speaking engagements and appearances that predated her nomination. They also said she “sought, obtained and followed State Department guidance and followed the Department’s travel regulations” before traveling on private aircraft.
“Ambassador Guilfoyle has served, and will continue to serve, with integrity, honor and distinction. We are evaluating all available legal remedies to collect this debt and any other potential causes of action,” the attorneys said.
Rubio initially defended Guilfoyle as a “strong ambassador” but later criticized reporters questioning him about the allegations.
“You guys walk around thinking that because some source told you something and you reported it, it’s the gospel. It’s not the gospel. It’s not the gospel for me. That’s not the way we do things,” Rubio said Thursday.

A second U.S. official told the AP that the State Department inspector general is reviewing the allegations, although it remains unclear whether a formal investigation has begun. The department declined to comment.
Three congressional Democrats — Rep. Gregory Meeks of New York, Sen. Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire and Rep. Robert Garcia of California — have called for an investigation.
Guilfoyle, a former Fox News host and California prosecutor, was previously married to California Gov. Gavin Newsom and was once engaged to Donald Trump Jr.
