President Donald Trump’s campaign rally for Republican Senate nominee Ken Paxton in San Antonio was repeatedly interrupted Wednesday night by protesters whom the president mocked and accused of being paid agitators.

Trump spoke for nearly two hours before a packed crowd at Freeman Coliseum, urging Republicans to vote in November’s midterm elections as though he were on the ballot. The president praised Paxton as one of the nation’s strongest attorneys general and warned that a Democratic victory would threaten Texas’ border security and push the state toward policies adopted in California.

The interruptions began early in the speech and continued throughout the evening, with security and police escorting several demonstrators from the arena. The crowd frequently booed the protesters as they were removed, while Trump used the disruptions to take shots at his opponents.

After one protester was escorted out, Trump told the audience, “That guy’s gotta lose a lot of weight. Wow.” He then alleged that “many of these protesters are paid” and that “they’re paid by enemies of our nation.”

As another demonstrator was removed, Trump encouraged any remaining protesters to “raise your hand and get the hell out of here.” The president also mocked one individual for “going back to mom right now,” adding that the protester did not realize his mother had voted for Trump.

The rally marked Trump’s third visit to Texas in less than a month as Republicans fight to retain control of congressional seats in November. Polling has shown a more competitive Senate race than Republicans initially anticipated, prompting the president to campaign alongside Paxton in a state that has not elected a Democrat to the U.S. Senate since 1988.

Paxton joined Trump onstage and thanked him for his support, expressing confidence that Republicans would prevail in November. Outside the coliseum, local Democratic groups and other organizations held demonstrations opposing the president and his administration.

Video clips of Trump’s exchanges with protesters quickly spread across social media, reminding everyone how off-the-cuff the president can be on the stump as he works the crowd. Supporters praised his responses as characteristic of his confrontational campaign style, while critics objected to the personal insults. Trump returned to discussing the economy, immigration and Republican candidates following each interruption.
