President Donald Trump issued a stark warning Thursday following a series of Democratic primary victories in New York, declaring that “the Communists are finally making their move” after several candidates backed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani secured key congressional nominations.

Trump appeared to be reacting to Tuesday’s Democratic primary elections, in which three Mamdani-endorsed candidates prevailed in U.S. House races. Two of those victories came against incumbent members of Congress, marking a significant shakeup within the Democratic Party.

Posting on Truth Social, Trump said he had anticipated a resurgence of communist ideology and argued that history has repeatedly shown such ideas do not succeed.

“The Communists are finally making their move,” Trump wrote. “I’ve been waiting and preparing for this for a long time. It’s easy to be a Communist — All you have to do is say, ‘I’ll give you everything,’ but that means you’re taking it away from others that have earned it. Over thousands of years, that Ideology has not worked once. The game is on. Enjoy watching!”

Trump’s comments followed a dramatic night in New York Democratic politics.

Former New York City Comptroller Brad Lander defeated Rep. Dan Goldman to win the Democratic nomination in the state’s 10th Congressional District. In another closely watched contest, union organizer Darializa Avila Chevalier defeated Rep. Adriano Espaillat in the 13th District. State Rep. Claire Valdez also secured the nomination after defeating Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso in the 7th District.

All three candidates received endorsements from Mamdani, a democratic socialist, during their campaigns.

Because each of the districts is considered solidly Democratic, the Mamdani-backed nominees are expected to prevail in the general election.

The results sent shockwaves through parts of the Democratic establishment, prompting public concern from several prominent party figures.

CNN commentator and former Obama administration official Van Jones described the outcome in dramatic terms.

“The roof is collapsing on the Democratic Party establishment,” Jones said after the primary results became clear.

Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville also responded forcefully, arguing that the party may be approaching a breaking point.

“And I actually do think it’s time for Democrats to talk the ‘s’ word: schism,” Carville said Thursday. “I really do. Everybody’s always said, ‘No, no. We’re a coalition. We’re a big tent.’ And there’s just some sh*t I can’t be in the same tent with.”

The victories by Mamdani-backed candidates have intensified discussion about the direction of the Democratic Party following Tuesday’s primaries. Trump framed the results as evidence of an ideological shift, while Jones and Carville each voiced concerns about the implications for the party’s establishment and internal unity.

Trump’s Truth Social message underscored his belief that communist ideas are gaining momentum following the New York elections, while Democratic leaders and strategists continued grappling with the fallout from a primary night that delivered several unexpected victories for candidates aligned with Mamdani.
