Vice President JD Vance has now reportedly addressed the correlation between illegal immigration and the escalating housing crisis in the United States.
Speaking at a conference in Washington, D.C., Vance highlighted the burden on American families who are struggling to compete with illegal immigrants for housing.
He pointed out that, on average, it now takes nearly double a family’s income to afford a new home, which he deemed unacceptable.
Vance argued that an influx of illegal immigrants has significantly increased housing demand, exacerbating the affordability crisis.
“One of the drivers of increased housing demand, we know, is that we have got a lot of people over the last four years, who have come into the country illegally. And that’s something we have to work on, if we want to meaningfully reduce the cost of housing too.” he said.
He noted that allowing millions of newcomers to compete with American citizens for homes leads to a preventable surge in demand, which has contributed to rising housing prices.
“Just think about this: If you allow 20 million people to compete with American citizens for the cost of homes, you are going to have a large and frankly, completely preventable spike in the demand for housing. And that is what we, of course, have seen, because while we made it a little bit hard to build homes in this country, over the last four years, we’ve also unfortunately made it way too easy for people to compete against American citizens for the precious homes that are in our country to begin with.” he added.
According to Vance, the immigration policies of the past decade have facilitated this competition, making it easier for non-citizens to enter the housing market.
He emphasized that there is a clear link between increased immigration and higher housing costs, negatively impacting working families across the nation.
Vance maintained that a consistent pattern emerges: as immigration rises, so do housing prices, making homeownership increasingly unattainable for many Americans.
During his speech, Vance encountered heckling from an audience member, who expressed support for continued immigration.
In response, he reinforced his stance, stating that his administration’s efforts are aimed at making living conditions more affordable for American families.
Overall, Vance’s remarks underscored the administration’s focus on addressing the challenges posed by illegal immigration while advocating for policies that promote affordable housing and support for American citizens.
He called for a reassessment of immigration policies to help alleviate the strain on the housing market and ensure that homeownership remains within reach for all Americans.
