Florida Senator Rick Scott (R) expressed on Friday his serious contemplation about running for Senate Republican leader. He promised to enhance communication with fellow Republican senators if he wins the position.
“This is a big opportunity,” Scott said during an appearance on conservative activist Charlie Kirk’s popular show.
His remarks were prompted by Kirk’s question regarding the potential of entering the race to succeed Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.), who revealed his plans to step down from the leadership position by the end of the year.
Should Scott decide to enter the race, it would become a three-way competition alongside Senate Republican Whip John Thune (S.D.) and former Senate GOP Whip John Cornyn (R-Texas).
Thune and Cornyn are discussing with fellow senators about potentially taking on the role of the next Senate GOP leader, with Cornyn officially declaring his candidacy on Thursday.
Following the 2022 midterm election, McConnell emerged victorious over Scott with a vote of 37-10. Scott expressed that he felt rushed during the campaign due to the timing of the vote.
Currently, he and other conservative figures, such as Senators Mike Lee (R-Utah) and Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), are pushing for a conference gathering to provide Republican senators with an opportunity to discuss their desired leadership reforms.
