The assertions that the trials of the former president Trump will reportedly affect the 2024 election were rejected by the former attorney general Bill Barr as being “simply wrong.”
Trump’s Washington trial was scheduled for March 4 by U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan earlier this week, one day before Super Tuesday, when more than a dozen states will hold their Republican primary elections.
“The basic principle in the criminal justice system is if a prominent person commits a crime and they’re seeking office, that doesn’t give them immunity. If there’s enough time to have it resolved before the election, it should be resolved.” Barr said during a recent appearance on Fox News.
“Just think, some mayor charged with massive embezzlement and he says, ‘Well, you know, it’s a year and a half to the election, let’s put that on hold while I run for reelection.’ It’s silly,” Barr added.
Trump’s legal team requested that the trial be held in April 2026.
Three trials are set for the primary procedure in 2024, the D.C. trial being one of them. Although a date for his fourth case in Georgia has not yet been set, it may occur during election year.
Two days after the Louisiana primary and one week before the primaries in Delaware, New York, Rhode Island, and Wisconsin on April 2, Trump’s trial over an alleged hush money plan before the 2016 election is set to start in Manhattan on March 25.
The trial for Trump’s alleged misuse of secret documents after leaving office is set to begin in Florida on May 20, one day before the primary elections in Oregon and Kentucky.
