Attorney General Merrick Garland reportedly asserted on Friday that any criticism of the Justice Department (DOJ) for partiality constitutes a “attack” on a “essential institution” of the democratic system.
According to information released by the Justice Department on Tuesday, Hunter Biden will enter pleas of guilty to two tax-related misdemeanor offenses, while a felony charge of falsifying information on a document used to purchase a handgun would be handled via a pre-trial diversion program.
Republicans on the House Ways and Means Committee released transcripts of IRS whistleblower depositions on Thursday, alleging that IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel and Garland had misled to Congress about the Hunter Biden inquiry by denying that the investigation had been tampered with.
“I certainly understand that some have chosen to attack the integrity of the Justice Department, its components and its employees by claiming that we do not treat, like cases alike. This constitutes an attack on an institution that is essential to American democracy and essential to the safety of the American people. Nothing could be further from the truth.” Garland said during a Friday press conference.
In an interview with congressional investigators on May 26, IRS whistleblower Gary Shapley said that a DOJ prosecutor rejected approving a search warrant for then-former Vice President Joe Biden’s residence as part of the investigation against Hunter Biden.
Shapley also said that the FBI informed Biden’s legal counsel of upcoming enforcement actions.
