According to a survey conducted in California and reportedly released on Monday, the majority of people believe Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) should step down.
In the Inside California Politics/Emerson College poll, 63% of California voters felt that Feinstein, 89, should resign so that California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) may pick a replacement to finish out her term.
The majority of respondents—37%—said they thought Feinstein should keep her seat and finish out her term.
The same survey indicates that respondents approve of Feinstein to the tune of 22%.
In a study of voters, 48% of respondents indicated they disapproved of the job she is doing, while 31% said they are neutral.
The findings come at a time when Feinstein’s health and capacity to serve in the Senate have come under scrutiny. After suffering from shingles and encephalitis earlier this year, Feinstein missed many months of the upper chamber.
Questions have also been raised about the senator’s alleged memory loss. When Vice President Kamala Harris presided over the Senate to deliver a tie-breaking vote, Feinstein was said to have shown perplexity, and was unsure of what exactly was going on.
Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) is one Democrat who has called on Feinstein to step down. Feinstein declared in February that she will complete the balance of her term rather than run for reelection in 2024.
The survey that was made public on Monday was taken between June 4–7, 2023. The sample size was 1,056 registered California voters, with a 3 percentage point margin of error.
