NewsNation host Chris Cuomo has a bold theory for why Democrats lost the 2024 presidential election: then-President Joe Biden deliberately sabotaged his own party.
Speaking on the Sept. 24 episode of his podcast, Cuomo argued that Biden was so angry that Democratic National Committee leaders wanted to replace him at the top of the ticket that he pushed then-Vice President Kamala Harris on them at the last minute. According to Cuomo, Biden’s quiet act of revenge paved the way for the party’s defeat at the hands of President Donald Trump.
“He was so pissed that they didn’t want him to run again, that I believe he submarined the whole thing,” Cuomo said.
The NewsNation host went on to lay out a series of accusations against the former president.
“I believe he forced Harris on them, I believe he delayed it, I believe he screwed up the process, I believe he wanted to punish them for not letting him run again. I really believe that,” Cuomo said.
Cuomo, who wore a shirt with the words “critical thinker” printed across the front during the episode, did not explain in detail how Biden supposedly “forced” the DNC to make Harris the party’s nominee.
He did, however, claim that Biden still admits to torpedoing the Democrats on purpose. Cuomo said that assertion is based on people who have heard the former president speak in his “private moments.”
Cuomo also made clear he was personally unhappy with the way the Democratic Party handled the 2024 race. He said he was “very angry” about it, adding that he was so “disgusted” that he chose not to vote for Harris.
Cuomo’s claim that Biden schemed to wreck his own party stands out, since most believe it was Biden’s disastrous debate performance against Trump that led him to exit the race.
That debate prompted dozens of Democratic lawmakers to call on Biden to drop out of the contest. Less than a month later, he did just that.
The debate performance was so troubling that even those closest to Biden were alarmed. Former first lady Jill Biden revealed earlier this year that she was “frightened” by her husband’s poor showing on the debate stage. She said she wondered at the time whether he had suffered a stroke on stage.
Cuomo’s version of events, however, places the blame for the Democrats’ loss squarely on Biden’s alleged desire for payback. Rather than a party forced to scramble after a failed debate, Cuomo described a president who resented party leaders for turning against him and who, in his view, made the process harder for his own side as a result.
The NewsNation host’s comments add a new and unproven twist to the ongoing debate over what went wrong for Democrats in 2024. While Cuomo insisted he truly believes Biden undermined the party, he offered few specifics to back up the claim beyond his own convictions and the accounts of unnamed people who he said have heard the former president in private.
