President Donald Trump reportedly said Monday he believes the families involved should determine how to move forward following abuse allegations against former White House aide and Rep. Max Miller, R-Ohio, declining to call for the congressman’s resignation while describing the situation as deeply unfortunate.
Speaking to reporters, Trump was asked whether Miller should step down from office in light of the accusations. The president responded by expressing sympathy for everyone involved while emphasizing that he did not want to interfere in what he viewed as a private family matter.
“It’s a very sad thing,” Trump said. “I know Max, he’s a good person, I mean, I always thought he was a very good person. And I’m going to let the families figure that out. His family, I know they’re working on it. It’s a very sad thing.”
Trump’s remarks come as Miller continues his reelection campaign despite allegations made by his former wife, Emily Moreno, the daughter of Sen. Bernie Moreno, R-Ohio.
According to a report by The New York Times, Emily Moreno accused Miller of multiple acts of abuse during their marriage. The allegations include claims that Miller threw hot water from a skillet, causing burns to her chest and stomach, held a gun to her head, pushed her into a wall and struck her head, and fractured their daughter’s collarbone while bruising her shoulder.
Miller has denied the allegations.
The congressman has also indicated that he intends to remain in the race for reelection despite the controversy surrounding the accusations.
Sen. Bernie Moreno publicly condemned Miller in a statement posted Sunday on X, arguing that the congressman poses a danger and should no longer serve in public office.
“As he has admitted privately, Max Miller needs serious psychological help,” Moreno wrote. “He is a danger to my daughter, and I hold my breath every minute he has custody of my granddaughter.”
The senator went on to say that Miller should not continue serving in the House of Representatives, arguing that the allegations reflect a broader pattern of abusive behavior.
“If there are any basic standards of character required to hold elected office, Max Miller fails them,” Moreno wrote. “He should not serve in the House of Representatives. I believe Max Miller needs to seek professional help to end the clear pattern of abuse he has left in his wake. I believe he should not be free to continue endangering others until he does.”
Miller and Emily Moreno were married from 2022 until 2025 before their marriage ended.
Trump was first asked about the allegations while boarding Air Force One on Sunday. At the time, the president noted that the claims remained accusations and said he intended to review the matter before reaching any conclusions.
“I mean, so far, it’s accusations,” Trump told reporters. “I’ll be looking at it.”
Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine also weighed in on the developing controversy, describing the allegations as both serious and troubling.
“The accusations are certainly very serious and certainly troubling,” DeWine said.
As the allegations continue to draw attention, Miller has maintained his denial of the claims while insisting he will continue his campaign for another term in Congress. Trump, meanwhile, has stopped short of urging any political action, instead saying he believes those closest to the situation should determine how to proceed.
