A new CNN poll suggests enthusiasm among Republicans for the remainder of President Donald Trump’s second term has declined, even as a majority of GOP voters remain optimistic about the administration’s direction.
According to the survey, 19% of self-identified Republicans said they are enthusiastic about the next two years of Trump’s presidency. An additional 58% described themselves as optimistic about what lies ahead.
Not all Republican respondents expressed confidence, however. The poll found that 13% said they are pessimistic about the remainder of Trump’s term, while another 11% said they are afraid.
Among Americans overall, the outlook was considerably more negative.
CNN found that 67% of U.S. adults said they feel either afraid or pessimistic about the country’s future with Trump serving as president. By comparison, 33% said they remain either enthusiastic or optimistic about the nation’s direction during the remainder of his administration.
The survey also measured public perceptions of Trump’s leadership on the world stage.
According to the poll, 38% of respondents said they view Trump as an effective world leader, while 62% said they do not.
The findings come as Trump enters a critical stretch of his presidency with less than four months remaining before voters head to the polls for the midterm elections. The outcome will determine whether Republicans maintain control of both the Senate and the House of Representatives.
According to the article, two issues in particular could pose challenges for Republicans in the upcoming elections: the ongoing war with Iran and concerns about the economy.

The poll produced similar results when respondents were asked whether Trump is focused on the nation’s most pressing issues.
Seventy-three percent said the president is not focused on the country’s most important problems, while 27% said he is.
Taken together, the results point to a challenging political environment as Trump and congressional Republicans prepare for this fall’s elections. While most Republicans surveyed continue to express optimism about the administration’s remaining two years, the level of enthusiasm among members of the president’s own party was considerably lower than the share describing themselves as simply optimistic.
At the same time, the broader electorate expressed substantially more negative views about the country’s direction, the president’s connection to everyday Americans, and his focus on the issues respondents consider most important.
CNN conducted the poll between July 23 and July 27. The survey included 1,225 respondents and carries a margin of error of plus or minus 3.2 percentage points.
The findings provide a snapshot of public opinion as Trump approaches the midterm elections, with the administration facing continued scrutiny over the Iran conflict, economic concerns, and broader perceptions of the president’s leadership.
