Conservative commentator Ben Shapiro is raising concerns about Vice President JD Vance’s recent appearance on Joe Rogan’s podcast, arguing the interview reflected positions that, in his view, departed from core conservative principles.

During an episode of his YouTube show released Friday, Shapiro began by praising Vance personally before turning to a sharp critique of the vice president’s remarks during the lengthy podcast discussion.

Shapiro described Vance as “charming and articulate” and said the vice president “is a very nice person.” He also complimented second lady Usha Vance before shifting his focus to what he viewed as the substance of the interview.

“But now it’s time to get down to brass tacks,” Shapiro said. “Would we like a Republican Party that is essentially a horseshoe Democratic Party? I’m asking because that’s kind of what the VP sounded like on Joe Rogan.”

The conservative commentator said he wants Republicans to defeat Democrats because of what he described as fundamental differences in political principles, not simply partisan loyalty.

“I’m not sure what he’s doing,” Shapiro continued. “Now, listen, I want the Democrats to lose. Not because I don’t share their jersey, but because I do not share their fundamental principles. So I’m looking to support candidates who, number one, actually oppose Democratic policies. And two, can also win.”

Shapiro argued that Vance did not fit those standards based on the comments he made during the podcast.

According to Shapiro, the vice president used the interview to argue against free markets and meritocracy while endorsing a larger role for government.

“So yesterday, on Joe Rogan’s show, the Vice President made a strong case against free markets and meritocracy. He talked about the necessity of bold, intrusive government interventionism … and he promoted a conspiratorial view of the world that undermines the meritocracy,” Shapiro said.

Shapiro went on to characterize those positions as inconsistent with the conservative philosophy he has long supported.

He said he found the interview “weird and concerning.”

The commentator also emphasized that his own political views have remained consistent over time.

“I’m a conservative. I have always been a conservative. I have not evolved my views,” Shapiro said. “I have not changed my fundamental principles. I’m not evolving on my views or changing my fundamental principles because they are based on extremely basic fundamental truths about politics and human nature.”

Vance’s conversation with Rogan covered a variety of political topics during the interview.

According to the article, the vice president and Rogan discussed their shared belief that Democrats in California “stole the election” from Spencer Pratt this year.

The interview also included discussion of the Trump administration’s handling of records related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

During that portion of the conversation, Vance told Rogan that he believes the Trump administration mishandled the release of files connected to Epstein’s case.

Shapiro’s criticism marks a notable public disagreement between prominent conservative voices, with the commentator questioning the direction of Vance’s policy views while reaffirming his own commitment to what he described as longstanding conservative principles. Although he praised the vice president personally and acknowledged his demeanor during the interview, Shapiro argued that the substance of Vance’s comments represented a departure from the policies and philosophy he believes Republicans should continue to champion.
