A routine military test mission turned tragic Monday when a nuclear-capable B-52 Stratofortress crashed moments after takeoff at California’s Edwards Air Force Base, killing all eight people on board and sending a massive plume of black smoke into the skies above Kern County.

The aircraft, valued at approximately $85 million, went down shortly after departing the runway at 11:20 a.m., according to Air Force officials. Images from the scene showed a towering column of dark smoke visible for miles and the smoldering wreckage of the bomber scattered across the impact area.

Several hours after the crash, Edwards Air Force Base confirmed that the incident was fatal for everyone aboard.

“An Air Force B-52 Stratofortress carrying eight people on a routine test mission crashed today shortly after take-off at 11:20 a.m. Initial indications are that the crash was not survivable. Emergency response personnel are on scene, and officials are working to account for all personnel,” the base said in a statement.

Military officials later confirmed that the victims included a combination of uniformed service members, government civilians, and government contractors participating in the flight.

Speaking during a Monday afternoon press conference, Col. James Hayes described the event as both “tragic and unsurvivable.” He said the aircraft crashed almost immediately after becoming airborne and emphasized that the incident remained entirely within the boundaries of Edwards Air Force Base.

The bomber had been conducting a test mission when the crash occurred. Hayes noted that missions of this nature are conducted regularly and that similar tests take place every day. However, he cautioned that determining exactly what caused the accident will take considerable time.

According to Hayes, investigators will likely need several months before they can establish a definitive cause.

In the immediate aftermath of the crash, emergency crews rushed to the scene while base officials moved quickly to secure operations.

Edwards Air Force Base announced shortly after noon that emergency personnel had responded immediately and that the situation remained active. The installation later issued additional restrictions, closing the airfield, diverting inbound aircraft, and suspending all non-commercial visitor passes indefinitely so resources could remain focused on emergency response efforts.

The tragedy prompted an outpouring of condolences from elected officials.

Gov. Gavin Newsom expressed sympathy for those affected by the crash, saying his thoughts were with the victims, their loved ones, and the broader Edwards Air Force Base community. He also thanked first responders and emergency personnel working at the scene.

Local Congressman Jay Obernolte also released a statement, saying that he and his wife were praying for the crew, their families, and the first responders responding to the disaster.

Before officials confirmed details of the crash, nearby observers reported seeing the dramatic smoke plume rising from the base. One social media user questioned whether an incident had occurred after noticing a large column of smoke aligned with one of the runways.

The aircraft involved had recently been equipped with a new radar system as part of a broader modernization effort intended to improve the B-52’s performance and extend its operational lifespan for decades to come.

Edwards Air Force Base, located in California’s Mojave Desert, is one of the nation’s most recognizable flight-test facilities and has long been associated with aviation innovation and experimentation. On Monday, however, the famed testing grounds became the scene of a devastating loss that claimed eight lives and left many questions still unanswered.
