Comedian Bill Maher reportedly took aim at the far left Friday night, calling out liberals who refuse to speak to family members who voted for President Donald Trump. In the final episode of Real Time before Thanksgiving, Maher delivered a blistering monologue criticizing what he called the left’s growing “no-contact” culture — a trend he says is tearing apart American families far more than politics ever should.
Maher opened by lamenting what Thanksgiving has become for many progressives: not a celebration of gratitude and family, but an excuse to exile relatives for voting the “wrong” way.
“What used to be about food, friends, family, football, fun — now it’s just ‘F-you,’” Maher said. “You’re not even invited because you voted for the wrong person.”
Maher acknowledged that conservatives sometimes do the same, but made clear this problem overwhelmingly comes from the left.
“I’m so tired of liberals ghosting half this country,” Maher said. “Conservatives do it too, but not nearly as much.”
The HBO host said the trend has gotten so extreme that “politics has broken up more families than letting your wife see your phone.”
Maher — who openly identifies as a Democrat and said he voted for Kamala Harris — criticized the left for splitting into two camps: the “we can still talk to each other” wing and the increasingly dominant “go no-contact” wing.
“The ‘go no-contact’ belief is that Trump voters, even your own parents, are too deplorable for human contact and must be cut off,” he explained.
Maher highlighted a July op-ed by former Obama speechwriter David Litt titled, Is It Time to Stop Snubbing Your Right-Wing Family?, which argued that cutting off conservatives is counterproductive and emotionally damaging. Predictably, Maher noted, the woke left tried to “banish” Litt for daring to question their intolerance.
He cited New York Magazine’s retaliatory piece, It’s Okay to Go No Contact With Your MAGA Relatives, which justified severing ties with parents over voting for Trump. One example included a woman bragging on social media that her son cut her off because she voted for the president.
Maher then called out Molly McNearney — wife of late-night host Jimmy Kimmel — who admitted she cut off family members who ignored her emailed ultimatum not to vote for Trump.
“Ultimatums don’t make people rethink their politics,” Maher warned. “They make them rethink you.”
Maher said liberals should spend less time lecturing others and more time asking why 77 million Americans didn’t trust them with power in 2024.
“You know what would have been a better exercise?” he said. “Write a list of 10 reasons why 77 million Americans didn’t want to trust you with taking power. And I say that as someone who votes Democratic.”
He reminded his audience that political beliefs are often family traditions people grow up with, not personal attacks that justify cutting off loved ones.
Maher’s message to left-wing Americans ahead of the holiday was unmistakable:
“Ghosting family members because they voted for the other guy is childish. This is Thanksgiving. Do yourself a favor: get over yourself and go have it with your family.”
