A California reparations committee has now reportedly proposed that descendants of slaves in the state be rewarded $223,200 apiece for “housing discrimination.”
California Democrat Governor Gavin Newsom established the nine-member Reparations Task Force as part of the country’s largest-ever attempt to address slavery reparations.
The California task group is focused on so-called ‘housing discrimination,’ which has been estimated to cost $569 billion if the decision is made to recompense the 2.5 million Black Californians for various social setbacks that occurred to black Americans between 1933 and 1977.
That is even more than the $512.8 billion spent by California in 2021 for its entire budget. A number which includes spending for schools, hospitals, colleges, roads, policing, and incarceration.
However, negotiations are still ongoing, and the panel is considering how exactly such payments should or can be given out.
The task team has also highlighted four more factors that could contribute toward reparations: mass imprisonment, unlawful property seizures, black business devaluation, and health care.
It reportedly has until June 20, 2023, to provide its final recommendations to the California Legislature.
Their estimates came after the task force held meetings around the state with members of the Black community in order to better understand the economic consequences of slavery.
Earlier this year, the task committee released a 500-page report describing why African Americans who are descendants of 19th-century slaves are allegedly entitled to complete reparations to the state.
