Fox News has now reportedly reinforced its position as America’s dominant cable news channel in the second quarter of 2025, registering a remarkable surge in both viewership and demographic influence.
According to Nielsen data, Fox averaged roughly 2.63 million primetime viewers—a 25 percent increase over last year—and more than 1.6 million daily viewers, performance that eclipsed both CNN and MSNBC combined.
With its continued dominance, Fox secured its 94th consecutive quarter as cable’s top-rated network, while CNN and MSNBC endured steep declines.
In primetime, CNN averaged just 538,000 viewers—down 13 percent year-over-year—while MSNBC hovered near one million, also suffering a double-digit drop. In daytime programming, CNN’s average fell to about 406,000, a 14 percent loss, and MSNBC’s to 596,000, down 26 percent.
The shift reflects a growing consolidation of conservative cable news audiences, fueled in part by Fox’s expanded reach on YouTube.
Digital viewership has exploded: Fox News saw a 109 percent jump in YouTube consumption, registering more than 2.3 billion views year-to-date—far outpacing CNN’s 1.1 billion and MSNBC’s 1.9 billion. Social media analytics show Fox’s online traction now rivals its cable dominance.
Industry analysts attribute Fox’s surge to a combination of factors: a steady stream of high-profile news events, exclusive interviews with political figures like President Trump and Elon Musk, and programming that blends opinion and analysis into a compelling narrative for its audience.
Flagship shows such as The Five, Hannity, and Gutfeld! continue to dominate key time slots, drawing between 3 and 4 million viewers on many nights.
In contrast, CNN and MSNBC have struggled to stem the losses, despite highlighting their digital growth and expanded streaming offerings. NBCUniversal and Warner Bros.
Discovery are in the process of spinning off their cable news divisions—a move experts say reflects strategic recalibration as traditional viewership erodes.
Critics worry that Fox’s unrivaled ratings advantage may exacerbate media polarization. With such a commanding platform, the network’s editorial choices carry outsized influence in shaping public opinion and framing political discourse.
For advertisers and media executives, Fox’s ratings triumph translates into greater leverage and revenue.
As cable news grapples with shifting viewer habits—particularly among younger, streaming-first audiences—Fox’s ecosystem of cable and digital dominance appears to be a blueprint for success in a fractured media environment.
In the closing months of the 2025 ratings period, Fox News has clearly pulled ahead.
Whether the network can sustain this dominance into 2026—and what that means for the broader media landscape—remains one of the most closely watched questions in modern broadcasting.
