Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) is now reportedly opposing the conditions that President Biden has placed on Israeli aid.
McConnell emphasized that the United States should not dictate to Israel how they ought to wage war against Hamas.
“It’s a democratic ally with an elected government — a unity government — and we shouldn’t be telling them how to conduct a war on their own borders. If they are a democratic ally, we don’t get to pick the leaders. And this is a unity government … it’s not about the prime minister.” McConnell said during a recent interview with Politico.
A day prior to the Kentucky Republican’s statements, Biden had issued a warning to Israel that certain arms shipments to Israel would be halted should the country invade Rafah, a city located in the southern region of Gaza that is currently housing more than one million Palestinians, in its entirety.
“I made it clear that if they go into Rafah — they haven’t gone in Rafah yet — if they go into Rafah, I’m not supplying the weapons that have been used historically to deal with Rafah, to deal with the cities — that deal with that problem,”Bide
Israel has been informed by the White House that it opposes the invasion of Rafah in the absence of a viable plan to evacuate civilians securely.
Reportedly, the United States halted the shipment of explosives to Israel last week out of concern for the Rafah invasion.
McConnell, whose influence was significant in securing last month’s passage of foreign aid legislation in Congress, disagrees with Biden’s threat to impose conditions on armaments for the U.S. ally.
Notwithstanding the president’s stern stance concerning the operation in Rafah, Netanyahu has maintained that the incursion would proceed regardless of Biden’s actions.
