As Trump gains in swing state polls, Democrats are looking for new, and in this case, dangerous, ways to stop him.
Representative Bennie Thompson, a Mississippi Democrat and ranking member of the House Committee on Homeland Security, has sponsored a bill to strip the former president of his Secret Service protection.
Trump has been specifically targeted by Thompson as the person whose protection would be stripped should he be found guilty in any of his criminal indictments.
Newsweek broke down one legal expert’s concerns about the potential law and how it speaks to dangerous and nefarious motivations from Democrats.
In a Sunday interview with Newsmax, Dershowitz, a member of Trump’s legal team during his first impeachment in 2020 who is also a constitutional law and criminal lawyer, discussed the legislation, which is co-sponsored by eight Democratic representatives.
“Bennie Thompson, he wants to strip Donald Trump of Secret Service protection…that’s if he’s convicted of this crime. So he would not have Secret Service if he’s behind bars. What do you make of that?” host Jon Glasgow asked.
“That’s ridiculous, that means they want him killed because he’s obviously a target. We live in an age where everybody is in danger. Look, Bobby Kennedy ought to be getting Secret Service protection, but certainly Donald Trump needs to get Secret Service protection. He’s not going to jail, but if he goes to jail obviously the law requires Secret Service protection,” Dershowitz said.
He added: “The judge [Juan Merchan] is going to bluff, fine and threat, but he’s not going to throw Donald Trump in jail. That would be a guaranteed victory…I don’t think it’s going to happen.”
Trump’s not the only one Biden and his supporters have prevented from being protected. While Democrats recently set up a national committee to target Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., the White House has so far refused to give the son of a slain presidential candidate Secret Service protection.
While liberal supporters of Biden has claimed that Secret Service protection is not required until 120 days before the election, New Conservative Post noted that in 2015, then DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson, under Barack Obama, approved requests from both Donald Trump and Ben Carson receiving federal protection a year out from the campaign.
Despite his well-known dislike for Donald Trump, Barack Obama likely obliged his request because he received Secret Service protection earlier than anyone ever before, a whopping 551 days before the general election and during his heavily contested primary against Hillary Clinton.”
Last summer, reports revealed that Biden has labeled Kennedy’s independent run as “annoying,” and Democrats have been searching for ways to keep him off the ballot in their attempt to “Defend Democracy.”
