Cathy Areu, a former Fox News regular known as the “Liberal Sherpa,” was arrested in Miami, Florida on suspicion of kidnapping and exploiting her mother for money.

According to a report from the Miami Herald, Areu was detained on Friday on fraud, abduction, and exploitation allegations.

Areu is also accused of attempting to utilize power of attorney twice to place her mother in assisted living facilities in order to get control of her mother’s assets.

The elderly woman was discharged on both occasions when the Florida Department of Children and Families determined she did not require such care.

Areu, 51, was arrested early Friday in Miami on a slew of offenses, including kidnapping, elderly exploitation, and an organized plan to defraud. Detectives from Miami-Dade County have been attempting to apprehend her since June, when a court issued a warrant for her arrest.

According to a news statement from the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office, she is thought to have been dodging arrest and even fled to Mexico for a period.

Areu remained in jail on Friday afternoon with no bond.

On Friday afternoon, her counsel, a Miami-Dade assistant public defender, did not respond to a request for comment.

Investigators think Areu stole approximately $224,000 from her 88-year-old mother’s money, including the profits of a reverse mortgage on the mother’s home. Investigators say Areu allegedly used her mother’s bank accounts and established credit cards in her name.
