Vice President JD Vance warned his fellow Republicans Thursday that they should look inward rather than blame young Americans if progressive and socialist candidates continue gaining momentum, arguing the GOP must address the economic concerns driving voters toward the left.
During an interview on Fox News’ “The Will Cain Show,” Vance said Republicans cannot simply dismiss the growing interest in socialism without confronting the financial challenges facing Americans.
“Our response to that [socialism] can’t just be to ignore the economic concerns that I think are feeding this rising interest in socialism,” Vance said.
The vice president argued Americans should have the opportunity to build prosperous lives and said the government should make it easier for people to achieve major milestones.
“You as an American citizen deserve to have a good life in this country, and you deserve to have a government that is making it easier for you to start a family, for you to afford to get a good education, for you to have a good job, for you to afford a home,” Vance said.
Vance pointed to the Trump administration’s economic agenda, while acknowledging that results from some of those policies may not happen immediately.
“These things sometimes take a little bit of time,” he said.
The vice president highlighted investments coming into the United States that he said would create middle-class jobs, along with the stabilization of housing prices and the administration’s efforts to push interest rates lower.
“We want people to be able to afford the good things about this wonderful country we all live in,” Vance said.
But Vance also delivered a pointed warning directly to Republicans about the consequences if the party fails to deliver tangible economic improvements for younger Americans.
“My warning to my fellow Republicans would be if we don’t get this right, don’t blame young people for being sympathetic to socialism. We’ve got to blame ourselves,” he said.
Vance argued that simply promoting traditional free-market talking points would not be enough to counter the appeal of socialism.
“You don’t stop socialism by throwing slogans at people about the free market,” he said. “As much as I love the free market, you stop socialism by making people’s lives better, and that’s what we’re trying to do every single day.”
His comments come as progressive candidates have gained ground in Democratic primary races across the country. President Donald Trump and his allies have responded by increasingly labeling those candidates, as well as other Democrats by extension, as socialists and communists.
At the same time, recent polling has shown voter dissatisfaction with the administration’s handling of the economy.
A Reuters/Ipsos poll released earlier this month showed Trump’s approval rating between 35% and 37%. The survey also found 37% of respondents preferred the Democratic Party’s approach to the economy, compared with 36% who favored the Republican approach.
For Vance, the message to Republicans was clear: countering socialism requires improving Americans’ economic lives rather than relying solely on political slogans.
