President Donald Trump on Monday reportedly issued a stark warning that an impending Supreme Court decision could deal a crippling blow to the American economy, costing the nation “in excess of 3 Trillion Dollars” and undermining his administration’s ability to defend U.S. industry through tariffs.

At issue is whether Trump exceeded his presidential authority under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), a decades-old law that allows presidents to regulate commerce during national emergencies. The Supreme Court is reviewing lower court rulings that struck down Trump’s use of the statute to impose sweeping tariffs, arguing that such measures require congressional approval.

Trump, who made tariffs a cornerstone of his economic and foreign policy, said the consequences of a decision against the White House would be “devastating” for the country. “If the Court rules the wrong way, it will cost the United States in excess of 3 Trillion Dollars and could cause a national security disaster,” Trump said Monday afternoon, reiterating that tariffs had strengthened American manufacturing and protected jobs.

The case, which the Court heard earlier this month, represents one of the most consequential tests of executive power in decades. Lower courts have sided with business groups who challenged the tariffs as unconstitutional, claiming the administration bypassed Congress. But the Trump administration argues that the tariffs were justified under emergency powers to counter what it described as unfair trade practices, particularly from China.

A ruling against Trump could force the federal government to refund billions of dollars in tariffs collected from U.S. businesses over the past several years. Economists warn that such a decision could disrupt international trade agreements negotiated during Trump’s presidency and threaten industries that benefited from the protective measures.

Trump has repeatedly defended his trade policy as both an economic and national security necessity. In a post on Truth Social late Monday, he claimed the Supreme Court was “given the wrong numbers” and that the financial impact of reversing the tariffs had been underestimated. He insisted that the tariff program had been critical to restoring American competitiveness and that the benefits far outweighed the costs.

In another post on Sunday, Trump dismissed critics of his tariff policies as “FOOLS” and said his approach had delivered tangible results for American workers. He also promised $2,000 “dividends” to Americans, though he did not elaborate on the plan.

Speaking to reporters Monday, Trump framed the potential Supreme Court ruling as a pivotal moment for U.S. sovereignty. “The tariffs are not just about money,” he said. “They’re about protecting America’s security, our jobs, and our future. Taking that power away from the presidency would be a national security disaster.”

For Trump, the tariffs were more than a negotiating tool—they were central to his broader vision of economic nationalism. His administration used them to pressure adversaries, secure trade concessions, and revitalize domestic production. While critics, including members of both parties, warned of higher consumer prices and retaliatory trade measures, supporters credited Trump’s hardline stance with bringing foreign competitors to the negotiating table.

The Supreme Court is expected to issue its ruling by December. A decision limiting presidential authority could reshape not only the future of Trump’s trade agenda but also the scope of executive power more broadly—potentially redefining how future presidents wield economic leverage in the name of national security.
