President Donald Trump has now reportedly indicated that he is contemplating imposing significant sanctions on Russia in light of its ongoing military aggression in Ukraine.

In a recent statement, Trump described the situation on the battlefield, noting that Russia is “absolutely pounding” Ukraine.

He emphasized the need for a ceasefire and a final peace agreement, urging both Russia and Ukraine to engage in negotiations promptly.

Trump’s proposed sanctions would include large-scale banking sanctions, tariffs, and other measures until a peace deal is established.

He called on both nations to come to the negotiating table before it becomes too late. This stance reflects a broader commitment to using economic pressure to influence Russia’s military actions and encourage a resolution to the conflict.

“Based on the fact that Russia is absolutely “pounding” Ukraine on the battlefield right now, I am strongly considering large scale Banking Sanctions, Sanctions, and Tariffs on Russia until a Cease Fire and FINAL SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT ON PEACE IS REACHED. To Russia and Ukraine, get to the table right now, before it is too late. Thank you!!!” Trump wrote on his Truth Social account.

Additionally, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent supported Trump’s position, asserting that the current administration is prepared to implement further sanctions.

He criticized the previous administration’s approach, claiming that weak sanctions had allowed Russia to sustain its military operations.

Bessent reiterated that any new sanctions would be applied aggressively for immediate impact, aiming to leverage negotiations for peace.

Trump’s history of sanctioning Russia includes measures taken in 2018 and 2019 against specific Russian officials and oligarchs, as well as actions restricting financial assistance to Russia from international institutions.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for an end to Russian attacks, urging the international community to hold Russia accountable as the source of the ongoing conflict.

The situation remains tense, with Ukraine’s military reporting a series of missile attacks from Russia. As discussions about sanctions and diplomatic efforts continue, the focus remains on achieving a lasting peace in the region.
