President Donald Trump issued an unusual public warning to Israel on Monday, urging America’s closest Middle Eastern ally not to “interfere” with what he called Syria’s ongoing “evolution” toward stability. The statement, posted on Trump’s social media platform, came days after Israeli Defense Forces clashed with terror suspects in southern Syria, resulting in multiple deaths and injuries.
Trump praised what he described as significant progress in Syria under its new president, Ahmed al-Sharaa — a former rebel commander who once had a U.S. bounty on his head until Washington began diplomatic talks with the new Syrian government.
“The United States is very satisfied with the results displayed… in the Country of Syria,” Trump wrote. “We are doing everything within our power to make sure the Government of Syria continues to do what was intended… to build a true and prosperous Country.”
Trump highlighted his own decision to lift “very strong and biting sanctions,” claiming it played a crucial role in Syria’s stabilization. “I believe this was truly appreciated by Syria, its Leadership, and its People!” he said.
In a message clearly directed at Israel, Trump continued: “It is very important that Israel maintain a strong and true dialogue with Syria, and that nothing takes place that will interfere with Syria’s evolution into a prosperous State.”
He further praised al-Sharaa’s efforts, saying the Syrian leader “is working diligently to make sure good things happen” and argued Israel and Syria could enjoy “a long and prosperous relationship together.” Trump called the moment a “historic opportunity” that builds on what he said was his administration’s continued “SUCCESS… for PEACE IN THE MIDDLE EAST!”
Trump’s statement follows his November meeting with al-Sharaa — the first meeting between a U.S. president and a Syrian leader since the nation gained independence over 80 years ago. Al-Sharaa, once considered an extremist insurgent, rose to power after the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s Iran-aligned regime. The U.S. had previously placed a $10 million bounty on him before reengaging diplomatically with Syria’s new leadership.
The president has been increasingly vocal about securing a long-term security agreement between Israel and Syria, positioning it as another step toward reshaping the regional landscape. Israel, however, maintains a military presence in southeastern Syria — a zone historically used by Syrian forces to threaten Israel’s northern border.
Tensions flared on Friday when Israeli troops engaged terror suspects in the region, leaving 13 dead and injuring six IDF soldiers. Amid the escalating skirmishes, Trump’s message implies that the administration views stability in Syria — and restraint from Israel — as essential to its broader Middle East strategy.
Trump’s comments reflect a delicate balancing act: reaffirming his support for Israel while urging the country to avoid jeopardizing what he believes could become a breakthrough moment between Jerusalem and Damascus.
