President Donald Trump warned Tuesday that Democrat-led states risk a bleak economic future if businesses and wealthy residents continue relocating in response to high taxes.
In a morning post on Truth Social, Trump argued that companies and affluent Americans are leaving blue states at unprecedented levels, predicting that the trend could have long-term consequences if it continues.
“Rich people and Companies are pouring out of Dumocrat run Blue States at levels never seen before!” Trump wrote.
The president went on to warn that states losing businesses and taxpayers could face significant economic decline.
“If this trend continues, these States will become the ‘Ghettos’ of the Future — No people, no money, no hope,” Trump added.
He concluded the post with his familiar campaign slogan, “MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!” followed by his name.
Trump’s remarks came just minutes after he shared a report published Monday by Just the News that examined Illinois’ economic policies and argued the state is following what it described as California’s “business-repellent formula” through high taxes.
The report highlighted the recent announcement that True Value Hardware plans to move its corporate headquarters from Chicago to Fort Wayne, Indiana. It compared the decision to the Chicago Bears’ planned move from Chicago to neighboring Indiana.
According to the report, True Value is the latest in a series of longtime Illinois companies that have relocated their headquarters elsewhere.
“True Value joins the ranks of other longtime Illinois companies like Boeing, Tyson Foods, Morton Salt and Caterpillar [to leave],” the report stated.
It also noted that Caterpillar had previously warned that Illinois’ inability to balance its budget and lower taxes would continue driving businesses out of the state.
Trump has frequently criticized Illinois and its leadership, and the president has repeatedly traded public remarks with Democratic Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker.
California has also seen several major corporations move their headquarters in recent years. According to the article, companies including Chevron, Public Storage, and SpaceX have relocated their corporate homes outside the state.
The article points to Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk as one of the most prominent executives to publicly discuss the reasons behind moving business operations away from California.
When Tesla announced in 2021 that it would relocate its headquarters to Austin, Texas, Musk cited California’s regulatory environment as well as what he described as the state’s “complacent” attitude.
The following year, Musk also questioned how California was using the tax revenue it collected.
“I’m pretty sure I’ve paid the most taxes of any individual ever to California, but it isn’t obvious what is done with the money,” Musk said.
Trump’s latest comments reflect his ongoing criticism of policies in Democrat-led states, particularly those involving taxation and business regulation. The president argued that high taxes are encouraging businesses and wealthy individuals to relocate, leaving states vulnerable to population declines and shrinking economic resources.
His warning also builds on broader arguments he has made throughout his political career that lower taxes and a more business-friendly climate encourage economic growth, while higher taxes and increased regulation drive employers and investment elsewhere.
By sharing the Just the News report and issuing his own warning on Truth Social, Trump once again highlighted what he views as the economic consequences facing states that continue to lose major employers and high-income taxpayers.
