President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he would “absolutely” support banning Sharia law in the United States, arguing that the country must preserve a single legal system.
Trump made the remarks during a live appearance on “The Glenn Beck Show” after conservative host Glenn Beck asked whether he would back legislation explicitly prohibiting Sharia law through an executive ruling.
Beck raised the issue while warning about what he described as enemies “inside our own gates.” He cited the Democratic Socialists of America and Islam while referring to what he called the “Red-Green Alliance.”
“On Sharia law, I would absolutely say that’s not this country,” Trump responded. “There’s no Sharia law. And you do have pockets of it, as you know.”
The president pointed to London and Paris as cautionary examples, claiming that Islamic law had become “almost like a second way of life” in certain areas of the European capitals.
“It is ridiculous,” Trump said. He told Beck that he would be on the host’s side, as well as the side of many others, because they were guided more by common sense than ideology.
Trump argued that successful politics is ultimately based on common sense and repeated that he would prohibit Sharia law in the United States.
“It is happening in this country a little bit, and when we see it, we take it out, and you have to take it out,” Trump said.
The president concluded by emphasizing that the United States should operate under one system.
“You have one system,” Trump said. “We have a great system. Sometimes it’s very frustrating, but it’s the best there is.”
