In an effort to combat severe homelessness and crack down on criminal activity, President Donald Trump reportedly said on Wednesday that the federal government should “take over” the city of Washington, District of Columbia.
During his meeting with reporters aboard Air Force One, President Trump expressed his belief that the federal government ought to establish law and order in the nation’s capital and seize power away from local Democratic leaders who, according to him, are not performing their duties.
“I think that we should govern the District of Columbia. I think that we should run it strong, run it with law and order, make it absolutely flawless.” Trump said.
“And I think we should take over Washington, D.C. We could save people from getting killed. They have a great police department there. Somehow they’re not utilized properly. We should govern D.C. The federal government should take over the governance of D.C. and run it really, really properly.” he added.
It has been claimed that he is going to sign an executive order in the next days to demand that the authorities in the District of Columbia take action to resolve the issue of crime and clean up homeless encampments.
In light of the fact that foreign leaders such as French President Emmanuel Macron and United Kingdom Prime Minister Keith Starmer are currently in the city, he stated that there ought to be a reduced number of homeless camps distributed throughout the city.
In his campaign trail speeches, he made a vow to reinvigorate the city, and these words were a reflection of those remarks.
Reportedly, the imminent executive order that Trump is planning to issue in relation to the District of Columbia would involve advocating for more severe sentences for both deadly gun crimes and minor offenses such as public urination.
Additionally, it would strengthen the safeguards that are in place for national monuments and federal parks.
