According to new reports, President Donald Trump issued a new executive order on Thursday, instructing the federal government to terminate all paid news subscriptions for employees working in the executive branch and agency offices.
Axios was able to obtain an email that stated that the White House had given instructions to the General Services Administration to terminate “every single media contract” that was supported by the federal government.
The General Services Administration is in charge of the technology, real estate, and procurement services performed by the federal government.
“Pull all contracts for Politico, BBC, E&E (Politico sub) and Bloomberg. Pull all media contracts for just GSA – cancel every single media contract today for GSA only.” a Trump official wrote in an instruction email to government staff.
The Trump administration has recently reached its decision, which comes just a few days after Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency disclosed that Politico was receiving taxpayer subsidies amounting to millions of dollars.
It was determined that the monies were associated with payments made to Politico Pro, a service that tracks legislation on Capitol Hill, over the course of several years.
Supporters of the president quickly turned to the internet to criticize the previous government for providing financial support to media outlets that are opposed to Trump.
Karoline Leavitt, the press secretary for the White House, made the announcement that the federal government would not provide funding for the services provided by Politico in response to the criticism.
