President Donald Trump has now reportedly set a two-month deadline for Iran to accept a nuclear deal aimed at curbing its ambitions to develop nuclear weapons.
If Iran fails to comply, Trump has indicated that the U.S. military will take action to halt their nuclear advancements.
This ultimatum was communicated in a letter sent to Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, although the specifics of when the countdown begins remain unclear.
The letter was delivered by Trump envoy Steve Witkoff to United Arab Emirates President Mohammed Bin Zayed, who then passed it on to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Tehran.
In response, Khamenei accused the U.S. of attempting to mislead global public opinion, refusing to engage in negotiations with Trump’s administration.
Despite extensive talks with the Biden administration yielding no agreements, Iran has significantly increased its uranium stockpile, now holding enough 60% enriched uranium to potentially create seven nuclear weapons.
Experts note that reaching this level of enrichment requires only a minimal additional effort to achieve the 90% enrichment necessary for nuclear weapons.
Trump has expressed a desire to negotiate rather than engage militarily, stating that a diplomatic solution could be as effective as a military victory.
He stressed the urgency of the situation, indicating that progress must be made quickly.
While the aim of the proposed negotiations would be to address concerns about Iran’s nuclear intentions, Khamenei has made it clear that any discussions aimed at dismantling Iran’s peaceful nuclear program will not be entertained.
The stakes remain high as the international community watches closely, hoping for a resolution that avoids military confrontation yet curblocks Iran’s nuclear aspirations.
