President Donald Trump took aim at filmmaker Michael Moore on Wednesday night after the longtime liberal commentator urged progressive Democrats to challenge their party’s leadership following a closely watched U.S. Senate primary in Michigan.
Moore made the remarks Tuesday while appearing on CNN’s election coverage, where much of the discussion centered on the Democratic primary for Michigan’s U.S. Senate seat. Former public health official Dr. Abdul El-Sayed defeated Rep. Haley Stevens, the candidate backed by much of the Democratic Party establishment.
The race drew national attention as the most expensive primary in history. According to the report, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee spent more than $30 million on advertising supporting Stevens, who backs Israel. El-Sayed has said he wants the United States to end aid and arms shipments to the country. Overall, Stevens held a nine-to-one spending advantage during the campaign.
During the CNN discussion, Moore was asked whether Democrats needed to overhaul the party establishment after recent election setbacks.
“If I could get on my knees and beg it would be for exactly what you said, because we are not going to win the other way,” Moore responded. “We lost that way in ’24. It’s not going to happen if we allow this to happen. We are in charge of this and we need to get busy right now.”
Moore continued by criticizing what he described as Democratic Party establishment “hacks” while praising El-Sayed, whom he has supported for years.
“I’ve known Dr. El-Sayed for many years, I worked on his campaign for governor in 2018,” Moore said. “Boy, we would be so lucky if he were our senator, representing us, and standing up for the people who are dying, dying every day over there.”
Moore’s comments quickly drew a response from President Trump, who used his Truth Social platform Wednesday to launch a blistering attack on the filmmaker and criticize El-Sayed.
“Michael Moore, the failed political ‘pundit’ who has been losing to me for years, was ranting that, ‘We lost in 2024, and just can’t take it anymore,’” Trump wrote. “No Michael, just get used to more losing! You’ve been a Loser all your life, and nothing’s going to change.”
The president also targeted El-Sayed, referring to him as Moore’s “new Communist Comrade,” and claimed the Democratic candidate would not be able to rescue the filmmaker politically.
Trump went on to argue that communist policies have consistently failed throughout history and contrasted that claim with what he described as the accomplishments of his administration.
“For thousands of years, the concept of Communist Policies have never worked, and they’re not going to work now, especially under the tremendous transformational SUCCESS that the Trump Administration has brought forth, for the entire World to see and follow,” Trump wrote.
The president pointed to what he characterized as the administration’s “Best Economic Numbers, EVER, Best Trade Numbers, Best Export Numbers, Biggest Investment in our Country,” before declaring that the United States is experiencing a “Golden Age of America.”
Trump concluded his message by asserting that Moore, El-Sayed, and what he described as “a small group of misfits” would not be able to change the nation’s direction.
“It’s too big, it’s too powerful, and it’s too good,” Trump wrote. “See you on the Political Battlefield. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN! President DONALD J. TRUMP.”
Following his primary victory, El-Sayed is now set to face former Rep. Mike Rogers, a Republican, in Michigan’s general election for the U.S. Senate this November.
