President Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau have reportedly now reached a consensus to suspend the implementation of tariffs for a minimum duration of one month, shortly after Trump consented to postpone tariffs on Mexico.
Following Trump and Trudeau’s second meeting on Monday, the 25 percent tariffs that were supposed to begin on Tuesday were postponed.
Trump stated that Canada will carry out its $1.3 billion border plan and committed to take additional measures to safeguard the northern border, as well as to work to stop the flow of fentanyl into the United States.
“As President, it is my responsibility to ensure the safety of ALL Americans, and I am doing just that. I am very pleased with this initial outcome, and the Tariffs announced on Saturday will be paused for a 30 day period to see whether or not a final Economic deal with Canada can be structured. FAIRNESS FOR ALL!” Trump wrote on his Truth Social site.
In his announcement of the freeze on social media site X, Trudeau detailed Canada’s new measures, including the appointment of a “Fentanyl Czar,” the designation of cartels as terrorist organizations, the creation of a combined strike team with the United States to combat crime, fentanyl flow, and money laundering, and the “ensure 24/7 eyes” on the U.S.-Canadian border.
According to Trump and Trudeau, they both signed a new intelligence directive with $200 million in spending on fentanyl and organized crime.
Trudeau added that Canada is strengthening the border with new staff and equipment as part of its $1.3 billion border plan.
Prior to the imposition of 25 percent tariffs on Mexico, Trump made a similar arrangement with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum earlier Monday, which is reflected in the accord with Canada.
They declared that Mexico will deploy 10,000 troops to the U.S. border with the mission of halting the flow of fentanyl and illegal immigrants.
Trump approved 10 percent tariffs on China and 25 percent levies on Canada and Mexico on Saturday.
Although China’s Ministry of Commerce stated that it would bring a case against the United States at the World Trade Organization, no declaration has been made regarding the tariffs on China.
