A news conference held at Mar-a-Lago on Thursday night was attended by President-elect Donald Trump, who stated that the United States of America needed to take control of Greenland “very badly” for the sake of national security.

Trump’s comments came after he had rekindled the controversy over the course of the past few weeks.

“Look, we’re gonna have to see what happens, because Denmark, we need this for national security. We need Greenland very badly. You look at the Russian ships, the Chinese ships, they’re all over the place. They’re surrounding. Now they have for a long time, that’s a lane, but we need that for national security.” Trump remarked.

“So I don’t know that Denmark has any right, title, and interest, and we’re going to find that out,” he added.

Trump claimed that although Denmark’s reluctance to cede the island is understandable, doing so will cost it.

“Now Denmark maybe doesn’t like it, but then we can’t be too happy with Denmark. And maybe things have to happen with respect to Denmark having to do with tariffs.” Trump noted.

“We need that to protect the free world, it’s very important, and getting more important every year,” Trump concluded.

Many conservative observers have praised Trump’s initiative to annex Greenland, citing its strategic significance and potential as a new frontier for Americans. For their part, liberals have mostly criticized the idea, allegedly that it is at best a distraction and at worst a kind of neocolonial project on Trump’s part.
