During a National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) dinner in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday evening, President Donald Trump reportedly urged House Republican holdouts to “stop grandstanding” and unite in support of a crucial budget plan he believes will pave the way for a significant legislative achievement.
He emphasized the importance of passing his proposed budget, which he described as a “big, beautiful bill.”
Trump encouraged skeptical Republicans, saying, “Close your eyes and get there. It’s a phenomenal bill. Stop grandstanding.”
He argued that slashing taxes for American workers and producers would lead to economic revival, job growth, and a manufacturing boom, asserting, “We got to get this big, beautiful deal done. And get it done now.”
He warned that delays could lead to undesirable outcomes, such as the introduction of a less favorable Democratic bill.
The discussion at the NRCC followed a White House meeting addressing an amended budget reconciliation framework passed by the Republican-led Senate.
This framework proposes extending 2017 tax cuts, raising the debt ceiling by $5 trillion, and increasing spending on national defense and border security, alongside modest spending cuts.
Despite Trump’s insistence, some House conservatives remain unconvinced.
Rep. Chip Roy from Texas expressed his reservations, questioning why he should support a budget built on promises he doesn’t believe will materialize.
Another conservative, Rep. Andy Ogles, predicted resistance to the framework due to the significant number of “no” votes expected.
Trump also expressed frustration over Republican attempts to restrict his tariff authority, issuing a veto threat and reinforcing that strong negotiation strategies, as he practices, are essential for favorable trade agreements.
His remarks reflect a call for unity as crucial budget discussions continue, highlighting ongoing tensions within the party.
