President Donald J. Trump has now reportedly publicly backed FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino on Sunday, seeking to downplay tensions between Bongino and Attorney General Pam Bondi following a dispute over the handling of documents related to Jeffrey Epstein.
Speaking from Joint Base Andrews, Trump told reporters that he had spoken with Bongino earlier in the day. “I spoke to him today. Dan Bongino, very good guy.
I’ve known him a long time. I’ve done his show many, many times. And he sounded terrific actually. No, I think he’s in good shape,” Trump said.
The show of support comes amid reports that Bongino had considered resigning in protest after Bondi supported a Justice Department memo dismissing conspiracy theories surrounding Epstein’s death and denying the existence of a so-called client list.
Bongino reportedly viewed the statement as premature and politically motivated, prompting friction inside Trump’s post-administration network.
In a statement on Truth Social, Trump defended Bondi and urged allies to rally behind her. “What’s going on with my ‘boys’ and, in some cases, ‘gals?’ They’re all going after Attorney General Pam Bondi, who is doing a FANTASTIC JOB! We’re on one Team, MAGA, and I don’t like what’s happening,” he wrote.
Trump added, “LET PAM BONDI DO HER JOB — SHE’S GREAT! … I don’t want to waste Time and Energy on Jeffrey Epstein, somebody that nobody cares about.”
The disagreement highlights lingering tensions among Trump-aligned officials and media personalities over how aggressively to pursue the Epstein narrative, a topic that continues to animate parts of the conservative base.
FBI Director Kash Patel also weighed in, posting on social media that Bongino remained in his position and dismissed reports of an imminent resignation as “fake news.” He added that the FBI remains fully committed to the president’s agenda.
While Bongino has not publicly commented on the situation, Trump’s remarks appeared intended to smooth over the controversy and project unity. Whether this intervention is sufficient to prevent further fallout within the ranks remains unclear.
The episode offers a window into the internal dynamics shaping Trump’s circle, as the president balances competing loyalties while preparing for another potential term in office.
