Mar-a-Largo recently had a surprise visitor. President-elect Donald Trump recently held a meeting with Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman at Mar-a-Lago, describing the Democratic senator as a “commonsense person” following their discussion. This meeting marked a notable moment, as Fetterman became the first Senate Democrat to meet with Trump since his election victory.
In an interview with The Washington Examiner, Trump said he admires Fetterman’s practical approach, stating, “He’s not liberal or conservative. He’s just a commonsense person, which is beautiful.” Trump also praised Gisele Fetterman, the senator’s wife, for her warmth and charm.
The two reportedly discussed a variety of topics, including the future of U.S. Steel, foreign relations with Israel, border security along the U.S.-Mexico border, and even the unconventional topic of acquiring Greenland. “He’s a fascinating man, and his wife is lovely. I couldn’t be more impressed,” Trump added.
Fetterman has carved out a reputation as a moderate voice within the Democratic Party, often seeking middle ground on contentious issues. He was the first Senate Democrat to sponsor the Laken Riley Act, which mandates the detention of noncitizens charged or convicted of theft-related crimes. The bill recently passed overwhelmingly in the Senate and will likely be the first law signed by Donald Trump during his second term.
Senator Fetterman emphasized his role as a representative for all Pennsylvanians, irrespective of political affiliation. “I’m the senator for all Pennsylvanians—not just Democrats,” he remarked, underlining his openness to meaningful conversations with people across the political spectrum.

Fetterman has signaled a readiness to collaborate with the incoming administration, hinting at possible support for some of Trump’s Cabinet nominees. Notably, he mentioned Senator Marco Rubio as a strong contender for Secretary of State.
This meeting between Trump and Fetterman demonstrates a potential pathway for bipartisan collaboration as the new administration prepares to take office, offering hope for productive partnerships across party lines.
