The U.S. Space Force has now reportedly announced the removal of Colonel Susannah Meyers, commander of the Pituffik Space Base in Greenland, after she criticized comments made by Vice President JD Vance during his recent visit.
Vance had warned about increasing interests from Russia and China in the Arctic, emphasizing the U.S. need to secure its position in the region amidst concerns about the security of Greenland.
He pointedly criticized Denmark for underinvesting in Greenland and not adequately supporting its defense and infrastructure.
After Vance’s speech, Meyers emailed her troops, reflecting on the impact of his remarks and expressing her belief that the Vice President’s views did not accurately represent the sentiments at Pituffik Space Base.
Her decision to voice dissent reportedly led to a loss of confidence in her leadership abilities, prompting her removal by Colonel Kenneth Klock of Space Base Delta 1 on April 10, 2025.
The official statement from the Space Force emphasized the necessity for commanders to maintain nonpartisan conduct while performing their duties, underscoring that any actions undermining the chain of command or President Trump’s agenda would not be tolerated.
Sean Parnell, Assistant to the Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs, reiterated this sentiment in a post, highlighting the importance of aligning with the established mission.
The decision to terminate Meyers was met with support from several Republican figures, who regarded it as a necessary action to uphold military discipline and commitment to the administration’s agenda. Schneider Shawn Lee has taken over command at Pituffik Space Base following Meyers’ dismissal, signaling a continued focus on maintaining a unified front in defense operations.
