Social Security Agency Reports Largest Records Cleanup in Its History

The Social Security Administration says it has conducted the largest cleanup of its Social Security number database in its 91-year history, addressing missing death records and incomplete or inaccurate citizenship information across roughly 50 million files. The effort also includes corrections to millions of records that remain underway, according to information provided to Fox News.

The agency added dates of death to 17 million records that lacked them, using its own systems and State Department data. It also filled in missing citizenship information for about 25 million files through the Department of Homeland Security’s Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements service.

Another 8.5 million records containing inaccurate citizenship information are being corrected. The agency said it has strengthened internal controls to reduce errors caused by manual data entry.

Federal and state agencies rely on Social Security records to verify identities, administer benefits and prevent improper payments. Officials described the cleanup as an effort to improve those safeguards, though the figures identify record corrections rather than confirmed cases of fraud.

“The Social Security Number database is our country’s books and records. The database’s accuracy is essential to maintaining integrity of government services for citizens. Accurate SSN records prevent fraud across federal programs and support the proper administration of benefits,” Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano said.

“This is the first time SSA has undertaken an effort of this scale, and I am proud of the work we have done to strengthen the foundation of identity data relied upon throughout government and the economy,” he added.

The database contains nearly 390 million entries, including approximately 330 million numbers held by U.S. citizens. The agency said the work began under the current administration and represents the first full-scale reconciliation of the master file since the Social Security program began in 1935.
