During a recent joint press conference in Jamaica with Prime Minister Andrew Holness, Secretary of State Marco Rubio reportedly addressed the recent leaking of a Signal chat involving Trump administration officials.
The leak occurred after a journalist was mistakenly added to the group meant for coordinating communications among top officials regarding airstrikes on Iranian-backed Houthi terrorists in Yemen.
Rubio described the situation as a “big mistake,” emphasizing that the chat was set up to facilitate communication with foreign ministers and to notify members of Congress.
He expressed his awareness of the serious implications of such errors, stating, “Obviously, someone made a mistake… You ain’t supposed to be on that thing.”
Despite the breach, Rubio reassured that no sensitive information was disclosed that could have threatened military operations or personnel.
He confirmed that the mission related to the chat was successful and ongoing. Rubio praised the efforts of everyone involved and clarified that the content of the chat was not classified as “war plans,” but rather a framework for communicating with international partners.
Additionally, Rubio indicated that the White House is conducting a review of the incident to understand how the journalist gained access to the chat and to ensure that such mistakes do not happen again.
He assured the public that reforms would be implemented to prevent future leaks, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the integrity of classified communications.
Rubio underlined the significance of the operation’s success, aiming to reassure both the public and military personnel that protocols will be revised to enhance security in the future.
