It is anticipated that President Donald Trump will soon sign an executive order as soon as this week, which would require the authorities in the District of Columbia to clean up homeless camps and reduce violence in the crime ridden city.

According to a new story from The Washington Post, the executive order calls for heavier punishments to be imposed on a variety of crimes, including severe crimes involving firearms as well as minor offenses such as going to the bathroom in public.

Regarding the contents of the directive, the White House is now in communication with the office of the Democratic Mayor of Washington, District of Columbia, Muriel Bowser.

It was stated by the Post that the directive would also reinstall an executive order that President Trump had signed in 2020 that safeguarded national monuments in particular, with a special emphasis on federal parks that are managed by the National Park Service.

Although there was a drop in crime in the District of Columbia in 2024 compared to 2023, which was a particularly violent year, there are doubts over the techniques that the District uses to report crimes.

Despite the fact that the National Incident-Based Reporting System of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has its own problems with reporting, the Metropolitan Police Department of Washington, District of Columbia (MPDC) does not include crime totals as reported to the FBI.

In spite of this, the website of the MPDC reveals that the number of homicides in 2025 is substantially higher than it was at this point in 2024, with a 57% increase.

With regard to certain topics, Trump and Bowser appear to be in agreement, according to the Post.

These concerns include a more aggressive approach to crime and additional funding for law enforcement. Trump has criticized the District of Columbia as a city that is plagued by criminal activity.
