Red Tide Alert: Texas Officials Warn Beachgoers of Dangerous Algal Bloom Along Gulf Coast

Texas authorities are sounding the alarm for anyone planning a trip to the state’s beaches, warning that a toxic algal bloom known as red tide has been detected along the shoreline and could pose serious health risks to visitors.

According to Texas Parks and Wildlife, red tide is a naturally occurring surge of microscopic algae that can prove deadly to marine wildlife while also triggering respiratory irritation in humans who come into contact with it. Department officials are actively on the scene, collecting water samples and tracking a growing number of dead fish reports across a wide stretch of coastline — from Crystal Beach and the Bolivar Peninsula all the way down to the north jetty at Bolivar Roads.

The monitoring effort doesn’t stop there. Texas Parks and Wildlife confirmed that surveillance has also expanded to cover roughly 12 miles of southern Galveston Island, starting at the south jetty and extending through Steward Beach and Pleasure Island Pier.

NOAA’s Coastal Ocean Science division backed up the concerning findings, revealing that water samples collected across Bolivar Peninsula, Crystal Beach, and Galveston Island between September 6 and 13 confirmed the presence of red tide, caused by the organism Karenia brevis. The agency is now predicting a high risk of respiratory irritation in Galveston County over the next 36 hours.

The bloom was first flagged for state biologists after reports came in on September 8, prompting the Department to begin actively tracking the situation off the coast of Galveston.

Since then, lab testing has revealed moderate to high concentrations of the toxic algae cells lurking in coastal waters. State officials say the danger isn’t just theoretical — beachgoers are already feeling real effects, with reports ranging from mild breathing discomfort to more severe respiratory irritation.

The National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science is warning that several beaches face a moderate to high threat level for respiratory problems in the days ahead. Officials note that the danger intensifies significantly when winds blow onshore or sweep along the coastline, pushing the toxic particles toward beachgoers, while winds blowing offshore tend to offer some relief from the irritation.

At the heart of the outbreak is Karenia brevis, the microscopic algae responsible for producing a potent toxin known as brevetoxin. This dangerous poison attacks the central nervous system of fish, causing paralysis and disrupting their gill function — a deadly combination that has left Gulf Coast shorelines littered with dead fish in past outbreaks.

Officials are urging anyone heading to the affected beaches to stay alert to posted advisories and pay close attention to wind conditions, as onshore breezes can quickly turn a pleasant beach day into a respiratory hazard. As testing continues along the Texas coastline, state and federal agencies are expected to keep a close watch on the situation in the days ahead.
