Mark Carney has reportedly been elected as Canada’s new prime minister, succeeding Justin Trudeau after securing a significant victory within the Liberal Party.

Carney, a former banker and climate activist, received 86% of the vote during the party’s election. In his victory speech, he expressed strong opposition to President Donald Trump, asserting that the U.S. seeks to undermine Canada’s way of life.

Carney emphasized that Canada will not yield to what he described as bullying, particularly in response to U.S. tariffs that he claims negatively impact Canadian workers and families.

He firmly stated, “Canada will not bow down to a bully,” and highlighted the need for unity among Canadians to confront these challenges.

“America is not Canada. And Canada never, ever, will be part of America in any way, shape or form. We didn’t ask for this fight, but Canadians are always ready when someone else drops the gloves.” he said.

The new prime minister also criticized Trump for suggesting that Canada could become the 51st state, asserting that this notion is unacceptable.

He declared that Canada would always maintain its distinct identity and would stand ready to defend itself against external pressures.

As Carney prepares to take office, he is expected to call for nationwide elections in the coming weeks, which could alter the political landscape in Parliament.

The popularity of the Liberal Party has declined recently, with polls indicating that the Conservative Party, led by Pierre Poilievre, may gain ground.

Carney did not hold back in his criticism of Poilievre, accusing him of aligning too closely with Trump’s agenda.

He argued that such alignment would weaken Canada and leave it vulnerable to external influence.

With a strong focus on climate activism and economic policy, Carney aims to steer Canada toward a more sustainable future while navigating the complexities of international relations, particularly with the United States.
