Richard Grenell, a longtime ally of President Trump and the United States’ ambassador for special missions, recently stated that he would consider running for governor of California in the event that Kamala Harris starts a campaign.
This statement has sparked new discussion regarding a potential challenge for the Republican party in the state, which is known for its deep blue color.
A veteran Trump adviser who also served as ambassador to Germany and as acting director of national intelligence, Grenell, pointed out the weakness of a speculated Harris gubernatorial candidacy following her significant loss to Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election. Grenell was referring to the fact that Harris was defeated by Trump in the election.
Grenell had previously considered running for governor in 2021, but she did not submit her application in time for the deadline.
He has continued to be involved in the Golden State, founding a nonprofit organization called Fix California with the goal of altering the political environment of the state, which is predominantly liberal.
In 2024, Harris won the State of California by a margin of more than 20 points.
Under President Trump, Grenell has served in a variety of positions, including one in which he was required to go abroad for special assignments.
During one of these trips, he had a meeting with the President of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, and he was instrumental in securing the release of six hostages.
Within the state of California, he has made appearances with local authorities in order to assess the damage caused by wildfires in Los Angeles County and investigate the restoration efforts.
He has maintained a consistent presence throughout the ongoing discussions over a possible campaign for political office.
The plans of Harris, who served as vice president until the end of her term last month, have been held close to the vest despite the fact that she has made many appearances across the metropolis of Los Angeles.
She has only made a passing reference to any potential future aspirations, and she has ignored direct questions regarding a candidacy for statewide office.
